Philosophy of assessment

My assessment philosophy. By Leonidas Murillo López.  Dear students,  It is not easy to open my heart and tell you about my purposes, feelings, and thoughts. May-be, sometimes, it makes me feel vulnerable, but I do not care because I want to show you myself as I am.  I do not want to wear a mask. I am a human being as you are. I still have weaknesses and imperfections. However, I can assure you that I just want to contribute to your life. I know a little bit about your fears, doubts, concerns, and everything you face or are going through because I have walked that path before. I am not here to say that I am a wise man, but to tell you that I want to be a good soldier in this war “called life”. Based on my experiences, I can give you some tools to survive and face what perhaps, you do not know.  Right now, I will mention two very important issues that everybody needs in life: love and discipline.  Love, of course, is not to let you do a...

How my teaching looked like

Imagen
Many years ago, in my school life, some of my teachers were very strict and most of the time they mistreated students. It was like a military camp. Everybody had to follow the rules because if we did not do it, the teachers (most of them) would punish us. A few of the teachers were loving people. They made us feel special students because of their treatment. I have to say it left a mark on my life. Of course, the bad way as the majority of teachers treated us, also left a mark in it. Years ago, when I began teaching teenagers, I used to be as a soldier and my classroom was like a military school or a jail. Rules were there just for controlling students' behavior, but not for creating a respectful atmosphere in the classroom. Those rules had no intention of enjoying a safe environment; they were not considered either as an agreement for coexistence. I was extremely strict, even though I laughed at them. Despite the “severity”, my students loved me because th...

Authentic assessment

I will cite two definitions of some authors about authentic assessment.   Jon Mueller says that authentic assessment is a form of assessment in which students are asked to perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills.   "Performance assessments call upon the examinee to demonstrate specific skills and competencies, that is, to apply the skills and knowledge they have mastered." -- Richard J. Stiggins. Authentic assessment usually includes a task for students to perform and a rubric by which their performance on the task will be evaluated.   I will mention some important elements taken into account in authentic assessment. 1. A school's mission is to develop productive citizens. 2. To be a productive citizen, an individual must be capable of performing meaningful tasks in the real world. 3. Therefore, schools must help students become proficient at performing the tasks they will encou...
